Frontend Engineering Lead

As a Frontend Engineering Lead at the Wormhole Foundation, you will make significant contributions to Wormhole’s ecosystem of open source smart contracts and protocols. Reporting to our Head of Product, you will own the architecture, development, and evolution of our frontend systems. You’ll be responsible for leading a team that delivers intuitive, performant, and secure interfaces across our suite of products.

What You’ll Do

• Lead the frontend engineering strategy, ensuring scalability, reliability, and top-tier user experience.

• Architect and maintain complex interfaces that interact with blockchain networks, APIs, and smart contracts.

• Collaborate cross-functionally with Product, Design, and Backend teams to define technical direction and priorities.

• Mentor and guide frontend engineers through code reviews, technical discussions, and performance feedback.

• Define best practices for frontend development — testing, deployment, and security — in a fast-moving crypto environment.

• Own performance optimization, accessibility, and responsive design across web experiences.

• Contribute to hiring and scaling the frontend team

The Ideal Candidate will:

• Have relevant tertiary qualifications in computer science or a closely related field (bachelors/masters) and/or relevant work experience 

• Have at least 5 year+ of experience in frontend development, including 2+ years in a lead or senior engineering role.

• Deep expertise in React, TypeScript, and modern frontend frameworks (Vite, Next.js, or similar).

• Strong understanding of state management, component architecture, and modern build systems.

• Experience integrating with Web3 technologies — e.g., ethers.js, wagmi, WalletConnect, MetaMask, or smart contract interactions.

• Familiarity with backend APIs, GraphQL, and data flow between frontends, backends, and blockchains.

• Solid grasp of UX/UI principles and accessibility standards.

• Strong leadership, communication, and mentorship skills — able to guide teams through ambiguity and scaling challenges.

About the role:

We’re looking for a Senior Data Engineer / Data Architect with strong financial markets experience to lead the design and evolution of our data platform. Experience in at least one of Front Office (Sales & Trading), Risk Management, or Finance is required. You’ll architect and build reliable, scalable streaming and batch data products that ingest and reconcile front‑office and market data to support intraday and end‑of‑day risk, P&L, regulatory reporting, post‑trade analytics and management reporting across spot and derivatives. You’ll work across Front Office, Risk, Finance, Business Development, Operations and Compliance domains to deliver cohesive, cross‑functional data products. This is a hands‑on role with significant architectural ownership and direct stakeholder impact.

Your responsibilities may include:

• Design and evolve core data models and services that standardise trade, market, pricing, risk and finance data across streaming, lake/lakehouse and warehouse layers.

• Build and operate streaming and batch pipelines to capture orders, quotes, trades and market data; reconcile sources; and deliver trusted, versioned datasets for analytics, risk and finance.

• Implement robust data quality, lineage, governance and access controls; define SLAs/SLOs and data contracts to ensure reliability and auditability.

• Manage cloud‑based storage and processing (AWS preferred), optimizing for cost, performance and scalability; support time‑series and dimensional analytics.

• Develop monitoring, alerting, anomaly detection and playbooks for incident response, backfills and reprocess/replay.

• Partner with stakeholders across Front Office, Risk, Finance, Business Development, Operations and Compliance to translate requirements into pragmatic data products; document, review and continuously improve tooling and processes. 

What We’re Looking For

• 8+ years in data engineering within financial markets. Experience in at least one of Front Office (Sales & Trading), Risk Management, Finance, Business Development, Operations, or Compliance is required.

• Strong programming in Python, Java and SQL; experience with Rust is a plus.

• Proven track record architecting streaming and batch ETL/ELT at scale using modern data pipeline and messaging technologies.

• Solid understanding of market/trade data lifecycles and time‑series concepts, or equivalent experience working with financial datasets.

• Hands‑on with a major cloud platform (AWS preferred) and cloud‑native data services; experience operating lake/lakehouse and warehouse architectures.

• Strong grasp of data governance, security and data quality practices, including lineage, cataloging and role‑based access.

• Demonstrated ability to deliver high‑reliability systems with clear SLAs, efficient backfill/replay strategies and cost/performance optimization.

• Excellent communication skills with the ability to align technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
  

Additional Strengths

• Exposure to digital asset/crypto datasets or infrastructure, or to traditional asset classes and vendor market data.

• Familiarity with regulatory reporting and audit requirements in financial markets.

• Experience with analytics/semantic layers and BI tools.

• Operational experience with observability and on‑call for data platforms.

• Relevant cloud or data engineering certifications.

The Opportunity

This is an exciting role as a key developer solving problems facing our finance, middle office and trading desks to ensure smooth operation of our trading strategies and financial reporting.

These systems have to process millions of transactions from dozens of different exchange and banking platforms around the world in dozens of currencies (fiat and crypto).

Job Responsibilities

• Work with the finance and middle office teams and traders to understand the core problems facing the team and firm’s cryptocurrency trading.

• Keep up to date on latest developments in the Decentralized Finance (DeFi) and cryptocurrency space.

• Design and build systems to facilitate trading activities, focused on middle office and finance functions accounting for trading on centralized and decentralized crypto exchanges.

• Develop full stack solutions using databases, message queues, websockets, HTTP and UI's to solve the complex problems involved in cryptocurrency trading

• Develop reports, monitoring tools, deployment tools and troubleshooting tools for our trading and accounting systems.

• Troubleshoot and resolve system issues as and when they occur  

• Engage with the wider team in system design discussions, code reviews, problem solving, brain-storms and daily office banter

Who you are

Our ideal candidate will have:

• Bachelor Degree in Computer Science, or other related discipline (although strong software development experience with a less directly related degree will be considered)

• 2-5 years’ relevant working experience, preferably in financial service industry such as a hedge fund, securities firm, bank, fund administrator or cryptocurrency firm

• A strong interest in decentralized finance and cryptocurrencies, and solving complicated puzzles that arise in this line of business.

• Can demonstrate good programming skills in Python, with a strong understanding of data structures and algorithms.

• Strong skills in data design.

• Able to articulate ideas and concepts clearly.

• Reliable, take pride in delivering robust software and are willing to be on call to support the systems you develop.

• Must be highly organized, have strong attention to detail and the ability to meet established deadlines
